What is ADHD?
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a condition marked by a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity that can affect daily functioning and overall development. To receive a diagnosis, these symptoms must be ongoing, impact everyday life, and have been present before the age of 12.
It’s important to know that similar symptoms can also arise from stress, sleep difficulties, anxiety, depression, or other medical conditions. That’s why a comprehensive evaluation is essential to understand what’s really going on and develop an effective, personalized plan.
While many children are diagnosed in elementary school, some adolescents and adults may not receive a diagnosis until later in life. Undiagnosed adults may notice a history of academic challenges, work-related difficulties, or strained relationships, all of which can improve with proper support and treatment.

Treatment and Therapies for ADHD
While there is no definitive cure for ADHD, a variety of treatments can help reduce symptoms and improve daily functioning. These may include medication, supportive psychotherapy, behavioral strategies, educational tools, or a combination tailored to each individual’s needs.
Medication
ADHD medications can help
reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity while improving
focus, productivity, and learning. Finding the right medication or dosage may take some time, and close, ongoing monitoring is essential to ensure it’s safe and effective. In my practice, medication is often combined with
supportive strategies and therapy when appropriate to provide a comprehensive, personalized approach.
Psychotherapy and Psychosocial Support for ADHD
In addition to medication, supportive psychotherapy and psychosocial interventions can play an important role in managing ADHD and improving daily functioning. These approaches are especially helpful when ADHD coexists with anxiety, depression, or other emotional challenges.
Some strategies we may incorporate include:
- Individual or family therapy to improve communication, strengthen relationships, and address emotional patterns.
- Behavioral parent training to equip caregivers with practical skills for guiding and supporting children effectively.
- Stress management techniques to reduce overwhelm and build healthy coping strategies.
- Support groups to connect with others facing similar challenges in a safe, understanding environment.
-
By combining these approaches with
personalized medication management, we create a comprehensive plan that addresses both the
biological and psychosocial aspects of ADHD, helping you or your loved one thrive.
